Eye Candy

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:15 pm

After listening to the LugRadio about eye candy I’ve played a about a bit with using transparency and drop shadows on the desktop. I used all the tricks in the gentoo wiki to create a desktop where the focussed window becomes opaque and all the others go transparent. Here are the results.

transparent windows

I’m not sure if I’ll stick with this as it seems a bit annoying at first glance. Looks pretty though :) .

2.0.5 Scapa and CNN

Filed under: Work, Scapa — admin @ 1:00 pm

I got 2.0.5 of scapa out the door on Friday. It is currently under a long term testing, both here and in London. There is one bug left were I see loads of duplicated packets on CNN, and only on CNN. It is really wierd I posted on linuxtv.org mailing list and see if anyone else sees anything similar.

Goldfrapp and Lips

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:00 pm

Got tickets for the Goldfrapp and Flaming Lips gigs at the Usher Hall this spring. Really looking forward to them both. I’ve seen the Lips there before it is a great venue, both gigs are sellouts such is the dearth of bands coming to this side of Scotland. Which reminds me we’ll have to take a trip through to King Tut’s again soon.

Phone fixed

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:11 pm

The home phone has had intermittent faults for about 3 months and is now finally fixed. The wierd thing is that the dsl was working right through this. The engineer explained to me today that dsl can keep working even if the ground cable is severed but the phone can’t. We are back in business now and hopefully the dsl will be much quicker as we’ll have a far better signal. W00t!

bug crushing

Since Christmas I’ve been clearing the remaining bugs out of the Gateway. This is now almost ready for release. Just to do a build and run through the regression tests.
This is also a unified release for the two hardware platforms and will make releases much easier in future. During the builds I’ve been playing crawl and now I’m hopelessly addicted to it’s silliness.

Shady’s back

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:17 pm

Since I’ve not written anything here in over two months, and so much has happened in that time I can look at this as a fresh start to this blog.

/Life
I’ve got married to Michelle, been on honeymoon to South Africa had Christmas and started back at work. That’s it in a nutshell. It would have been great to blog what was going on in the run up to the wedding and that, but that is all a bit sad.

/Geek
Photos of the wedding are on my flickr page, I’ve also set up a chess game on this website so I can keep up with my chess playing pals.
Also setting up a site for my mum to showcase her greetings cards.

/Work
Releasing a new version of the gateway(scapa). It is much improved as far as managment of it goes. And has a *lot* more features.

That’s all for today, but I resolve to blog more frequently on news, and life in future.
